Word of the Week – Paper

Each Friday, I would like to share a word of the week with you. Something that summarises what I’ve been up to, how I’ve felt and how life is generally going. I’d love if you’d share your own in the comments or even join in with the link up if you are a blogger. (You can find the details at the bottom of this post.) It can be so therapeutic to reflect on what’s been happening, good or bad. It will be nice to look back on these posts in the future too!

This week I have chosen the word Paper

You will be relieved to know that this post is not about toilet paper. After all of the uproar of the past few months, I am pleased to say that today’s post is about something far happier. On Monday Mike and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary! This first year of marriage is of course celebrated by the paper anniversary. It occurred to me that I had no idea why this was, so I did a bit of reading.

It turns out, no one is entirely sure. Some articles told me that it is to represent the first chapter of your life together and the paper of the pages on which this chapter would be written. Other articles suggested that the paper represents the fragility of your relationship in these early stages if marriage, much like the delicate nature of paper. Whichever is true, it was nice to have some guidance for gift buying. I don’t know about you, but my other half can be incredibly difficult to buy for at times. If you happen to know the real reason behind the paper gift, please share!

Plans for the day had to be minimal as we did of course stay at home. The sun was out in all of its glory so we spent much of the day sitting in the garden and just enjoying our time together. To bring back wonderful memories of our honeymoon, Mike planned a six course Italian meal for us which we started in the late afternoon. If you’ve ever been to Italy you will know that a traditional meal features many courses of anti-pasti, meat, fish, pasta and pudding. Naturally, the take a long time to eat too. Perfect for a day with nowhere to go! In the interest of celebrating properly we even popped open a bottle of bubbles. Don’t worry, it was an alcohol free Nosecco!

Rather embarrassingly, my gifts didn’t arrive on time. Thankfully most of them have now but I’m still waiting on one parcel. My fingers are crossed that it arrives today and I can finally surprise Mike. We are going to use the delay as an excuse to have a second celebration this weekend. We’ll order from our favourite tapas place around the corner and enjoy yet more Nosecco. Pretty soon these quiet celebrations won’t be possible so why not make the most of it?

  1. Congratulations! What a wonderful word of the week, I’m not sure why it’s paper but all of the reasons you gave make perfect sense. I’m glad you were able to enjoy your day even if your presents didn’t arrive on time.

You know, I actually love that lockdown is forcing us to find new ways of doing things! We’re not overly fancy when it comes to celebrations, but we’d most likely go out somewhere otherwise. It makes me happy that I’ve been able to find so many positives during such a weird time! #wotw

  2. Aww! Happy anniversary to you and your hubby! That is interesting to read why it is celebrated with paper. It sounds like you had a lovely day. The meals sounds amazing! Enjoy your 2nd celebration over the weekend x

  3. Aww happy 1st wedding anniversary to you both. Interesting to read about some of the thoughts as to why it’s paper for the first one – I have to admit I never really thought much about it before. The Italian meal and Nosecco sounds like a lovely way to celebrate and how lovely to an excuse for a second celebration (although it is frustrating when presents don’t arrive on time). Definitely make the most of it while you can 🙂 #WotW
