Word of the Week – Decorating

Each Friday, I would like to share a word of the week with you. Something that summarises what I’ve been up to, how I’ve felt and how life is generally going. I’d love if you’d share your own in the comments or even join in with the link up if you are a blogger. (You can find the details at the bottom of this post.) It can be so therapeutic to reflect on what’s been happening, good or bad. It will be nice to look back on these posts in the future too!

This week I have chosen the word Decorating

What else are you likely to find a soon to be mum and dad doing when they find themselves locked in the house for several weekends in a row? Decorating the baby’s room of course! Well, we were actually stripping the baby’s room this week. We removed the wallpaper and years of gloss paint. I thought that the word “stripping may prove to be problematic though…

Anyway! The smallest room in our house sits right next to ours and it hasn’t been touched since we moved in three years ago. It has a small desk in the corner for when Mike works from home. Sometimes it comes in handy as a spare room for guests. Most of the time though, it’s the junk room. The room where boxes go to be forgotten. This time last week I was surrounded by bin bags and piles of stuff that I hadn’t seen in a very long time. Clearing out is always my least favourite stage but it needed doing!

Once the space was empty we were able to get started on the walls. I’m so pleased to say that the paper came off without too much difficulty. Even the old paint was pretty easy to remove, with the help of a heat gun. We’re hoping to get the preparation finished this weekend and then we can have the room painted for a new carpet and blind when lockdown is over. We won’t be doing too much more to the room just yet. We’ve still got six months to go until baby is due so we can take our time with furniture and finishing touches closer to my due date.

After a busy weekend, I even went as far as decorating my face on Tuesday morning. Not something I would normally deem noteworthy of course, but it’s only the second time in five weeks that I’ve actually put make-up on. I figured that my second trip out of the house warranted the special treat. This time I was off to the hospital for my scan and bloods. I even styled my hair. It was quite the event. Hopefully the Sonographer appreciated my extensive effort! Of course I’m pregnant, which apparently means no more energy ever. By the time I had got myself spruced up and ready to leave the house I felt like having a nap.

  1. Sounds like a busy week stripping paper and paint and sorting out ready to start decorating the baby’s room. Our little room was also the junk room so we had a similar time having to sort out boxes and bags of stuff. Good luck with getting it all done. Hope all went well with the scan and bloods. I remember the exhaustion that came with pregnancy. It did get better in the second trimester though so hopefully it will pick up again for you. Hope you are keeping well. #WotW

Thankfully it’s such a small room that it hasn’t taken too long at all. Of course I’m taking plenty of breaks too, I need those snacks to keep me going 😉 The scan and bloods were totally fine. Going without Mike was a bit strange, but everything was looking good so I’m happy! I can relax and enjoy the next few weeks at home now #wotw

  2. Well done! I really thought that being in lock down would mean we’d get some decorating done, I’ve had the paint around 18 months and the stairs and downstairs bathroom need a coat. But it seems that everyone has become lazy. No, I take that back, hubby cleaned out his shed (man cave) which was a BIG mission and he’s kept up with the gardening. Eldest daughter has had a big clearout in her room and her walk in wardrobe is now a walk in wardrobe rather than a junk cupboard. I can wait for the painting. I just wish I could do it myself. I hope the hospital appointment went well, I find that I get dressed up for a visit to the hospital too, for me it’s generally my only outing anyway x

I suppose that we have some good motivation Anne as the baby will actually need somewhere to sleep at some point, as a first time mum I have no idea when that will be of course! Otherwise I guarantee that room would remain a mess for another three years at least. The hospital appointment was totally fine, although a little weird without Mike there. I focused on the joy of seeing those kicks again, we apparently have a very active baby 🙂 #wotw

  3. You’ve been busy! Smart starting early as the last stage of pregnancy always seemed to fly by too fast for me. #WotW

    1. Sunshine and Rain says:

Well I figured it’ll be far harder for me to move around with ease when I’ve got a big old bump in front of me so it just makes sense! I’ll be so much more relaxed in the later months knowing we have everything organised too 🙂 #wotw

  4. Ohh! How exciting! Decorating the babies room is such a big thing. It sounds like you’ve worked hard. Good luck with the painting and have fun buying the new furniture and accessories. That’s the fun part. x

I’ve already been scouring Pinterest Kim! So many ideas…I just need to watch I don’t go crazy with the shopping! #wotw

  5. I loved setting up the baby room. Clearing and decorating only. I wouldn’t have anything else baby-wise in the house until very near the time. Good job eldest was 2 weeks late. If she had been early, she’d have been sleeping in a drawer! Take it easy. Sleep is good. #wotw

It’s definitely getting me very excited for November now! We’re very lucky to be inheriting a few of the key items we’ll need so some of the nursery will be in place, but we won’t be going over board. #wotw
