Word of the Week – Office

Each Friday, I would like to share a word of the week with you. Something that summarises what I’ve been up to, how I’ve felt and how life is generally going. I’d love if you’d share one in the comments. It can be so therapeutic to reflect on what’s been happening, good or bad!

This week I have chosen the word Office

My choice of word this week is a little bit of a boring one, but it actually has a really positive meaning behind it.

If you’ve been following my blog for a little while you’ll know that I work from home. I’m very lucky to have the space in my house to use one of the rooms as an office space for my business. Despite this I got myself into the habit of working from the sofa every single day.

Don’t get me wrong, I looooove working from the comfort of the sofa and always hit all my deadlines without any issues. A few negative associations were starting to pop up for me though. Most significantly I started to find the day and evening just blending into one. I was surrounded by my laptop and books constantly. I’m very lucky to love what I do, but I was working far longer than I should have been as a result.

Now that I have two separate spaces, one for work and work for relaxing, I can feel a difference between parts of the day. I now come downstairs to a spotless living room every evening ready to enjoy dinner and chill with my better half knowing that work is all organised and ready to go the next morning.

I’ve also found myself taking my work more seriously. I have always behaved professionally when it comes to freelancing of course, but I’ve always thought of my Etsy shop as “something small on the side”. It deserves more than that. It is a proper job and I’m already seeing improvements now that I am treating as such.

Moving from the sofa to my office has been a simple change, but it has had such a positive impact on my focus and my attitude to my work already. I’m so glad I made the change!

  1. That’s fabulous, I so want an office area myself. I too work from the sofa, which means I don’t switch off when I should. I’m a bit jealous of you now…I’ll have to start sorting out my office area soon, I have the space, just nothing in right now! Thanks for linking up to #wotw xx

Oh please do share your space when it’s done! My desk is just one of the really basic ones from Ikea, nothing fancy. I do have a very comfy chair though…that helps a lot 😛

  2. I need to take a leaf out of your book, I have a desk upstairs but have been working from the sofa since Christmas. I’ve been so unproductive lately and I’m sure it’s because there’s no definition between working and relaxing. You have inspired me to work from my desk next week ! #WotW

I love that Angela, I hope it helps! Don’t get me wrong, I still love the occasional sofa day but it’s so nice to have the division. As I said to Anne, I have a very comfy chair at my desk so that definitely helps me to stay here all day!

  3. I really want an office or even a desk but at the moment we have no space. I know when I sit at the dining table with my laptop I am always more productive but it’s just not practical. Hmmf x

I’ve tried the dining table in the past Kim but I always just leave it in a mess that then needs tidied up every night. Oops! #WotW

  4. sounds like a win win all round, and I am sure a less cluttered downstairs is more relaxing. #wotw

Absolutely Elaine, it is making such a difference! #WotW

  5. I completely know what you mean. I work from home and have an office at the side of the house. It is so good to shut the door on work and walk along the corridor to the house at the end of the day. It’s a converted washhouse and really cold in winter. Rather than turning on the heating, I end up working at the kitchen table in winter. It is harder to switch off. Hope your office continues to be a positive room for you. #wotw

It is nice to be able to leave your work in one space and pick up where you left off the next day! Oh I can imagine it’s freezing right now. Let’s hope for warmer weather soon! #WotW

  6. I’ve never worked from home – I only blog for fun but I must admit if I ever do I think there will need to be separate work/home spaces

    1. Sunshine and Rain says:

It definitely helps to have some separation 🙂 Fingers crossed you get to enjoy it at some point in the future Karen! #WotW

  7. Glad that focusing on working in your home office has helped give a clearer divide between work time and time to relax. My home office is in the corner of my lounge. We do have a study (usually known as the “man cave” as it’s my husband’s office when working from home) but I hate the feeling of being separated from the rest of the house in there so tend to prefer to stay in the lounge. It does make it hard not to get distracted sometimes! 🙂 #WotW

I had the very same dilemma Louise! I love the comfort of the living room and like being able to see what’s going on in the street too. I can’t see very much from the office. It is far more productive though! #WotW
