Word of the Week – Balance

Each Friday, I would like to share a word of the week with you. Something that summarises what I’ve been up to, how I’ve felt and how life is generally going. I’d love if you’d share one in the comments. It can be so therapeutic to reflect on what’s been happening, good or bad!

This week I’ve chosen the word balance.

It has been a full on seven days! After a month or so of being very quiet work wise, the combination of starting two new blogs and work getting busier again has certainly been a challenge. I’ve really had to start figuring out how I’m going to find my balance between the two as well as ticking off everything else on my to do list each week.

I freelance as an architectural assistant and for some reason June was unbelievably slow. I imagine it mostly comes down to the fact that it is summer. Everyone is looking to spend money on activities and holidays over extending their homes at this time of year.

In order to combat my work issue I spent some time reaching out to potential new clients. Sometimes this works really well and I receive a lot of positive replies, sometimes I hear nothing. This time, it went well. Yes there is a chance I may have done a happy dance as emails came through.

I have heard back from around three or four different architects who are keen to begin working with me. This is fantastic news of course, but the anxious me always gets a bit overwhelmed for a short time. You always want to make a good impression and do a really good job to prove your worth on the first project. I’ll settle into it, I always do.

There’s a funny thing about owning a home…you have to clean it. If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, you have to keep that in good nick too. The busier I get the more I realise that being an adult is hard work and I’d rather just have my mum come stay to help me with everything…my fiance would love that I’m sure!

To help calm my brain down I’ve made an attempt to be more organised and stay on top of to-do lists and deadlines. I love a good list, so I find this bit fun!

Work takes priority. I will keep track of current and incoming projects and make sure I know all of my deadlines. I’ll focus on these between 9 and 5, roughly, to make sure everything is done as and when it should be.

The calendar feature on WordPress is well and truly in action and any time I find myself thinking about the blog I jump on quickly to throw down my thoughts into a draft post. I often find myself thinking about things when I’m about to fall asleep or when I’m in the bath. A lot of notes get thrown into emails to myself first to ensure I don’t forget them!

My cleaning routine had become a bit of a habit of finding a quiet day in the week and doing it all at once. That might not be so possible now. Instead, I’m going to designate one task to each day. That way it can slot in between other things and I can feel like I’m on top of things even on really busy days.

This should give me balance in my day and balance in my head too!

So there it is, my word of the week and a summary of the past seven days.

  1. That’s great news about managing to find some new clients. Breaking up the cleaning jobs over the week rather than trying to do it all in one go is something I try to do as well although sometimes it ends up being left and then done all at once again. I love the calendar feature on WordPress – it’s great for planning blog posts. Sounds like you’ve had a good week. #WotW

Same Louise, I try my best but sometimes you just have to run around the house with a duster and the hoover and hope you catch most of the dirt don’t you?! Ah well, it’s clean MOST of the time! Looking back it has been a good week, but I was definitely anxious throughout. I’m really enjoying reflecting like this, it helps you realise the positives 🙂

  2. It’s all about the balance isn’t it, I’m still trying to crack that one. I have times when I’m super organised and times when I feel overwhelmed and nothing gets done. It sounds like you have a good plan. Great news about the potential new clients x #WotW

I might have a great plan…but let’s see if I can actually stick to it! #WotW

  3. It can be so tricky to balance everything, can’t it? I work from home, too, so find I have to compartmentalise everything to ensure it can all get done. This is where my bullet journal is fab, I wouldn’t be without it, I need those to-do lists! Thanks for sharing with #WotW

I love the idea of having a bullet journal and I did try it at one time, but I’m always hopping between notebooks and losing track of things. I’m not big into technology or apps or anything, but strangely the one place I do keep track of things is my phone. You just have to find what suits don’t you? #WotW

  4. Balancing life is so tricky so well done for finding some in yours. I think maybe this is something I need to address myself.

Even when you’re into a routine that works it’s good to check in see what can be improved on isn’t it? The more quiet time I can find to hide away with a bar of chocolate the better!

  5. It sounds like you have been busy! That is great news about the work you have found.
I am still trying to balance my life….Some days I feel like I’ve nailed it, other days not so much… #WotW

Same Kim! There are definitely a lot of bad days alongside the good, but that’s life isn’t it! #WotW

Balance is.hard but when you.acjeive it life is good. Sounds like a productive week and you know what works well for you and your lifestyle X #wotw

    1. Sunshine and Rain says:

I’m getting there anyway. I think even the act of trying to find balance can have a positive impact, even if you don’t actually achieve it! #WotW

  7. Running multiple blogs is definitely a juggle isn’t it! #WotW

  8. YAY @ Positive responses from emails! Whenever I send them out, I find myself refreshing my inbox much more than usual, and stressing myself out about what the recipients think of me. Sometimes I wish I could turn off my think function – for a little while, anyway. #WotW

    1. Sunshine and Rain says:

It’s nerve wracking isn’t it! I should point out though that each time I send out emails I do around 30-40 and this was after a couple of lots so it’s about normal.
